Content marketing manager resume example
A content marketing manager’s resume with 11 years of writing behind it and four years leading a content team in B2B software. Marketing directors hiring for this role want an editor who thinks like a marketer, so the bullets move from output to traffic to sign-ups and pipeline.
What recruiters look for
- Content tied to revenue: sign-ups, leads, pipeline influenced, not just page views.
- Strategy, not only output: topic clusters, editorial calendars, the reasoning behind what you publish.
- Team and process: writers and freelancers you manage, workflows and style guides you built.
- Range of formats: articles, reports, newsletters, case studies, video or podcasts.
- Writing and editing quality: a portfolio of your own work and work you edited.
Writing the summary
Say your years in writing and in content leadership, the industry, the team you run and your best business result from content. Write it as well as you would a lede.
Content marketing manager with 11 years in writing and editing, the last four leading content for a B2B accounting software company. I run a team of two writers and a dozen freelancers, and I measure content by the pipeline it creates: content-sourced sign-ups grew from 900 to 3,400 a month under my plan.
Content marketing manager in consumer or e-commerce
Content marketing manager with eight years in consumer brands, now leading editorial, email and video content for an outdoor gear retailer. Our buying guides and how-to videos bring in 1.2 million visits a month and drive 18% of online revenue.
Senior writer stepping up to manage content
Senior content writer with seven years in B2B tech, now planning our editorial calendar and editing two junior writers. I write the articles that bring in our most trial sign-ups and am ready to lead the content program.
Bullet points that work
Strong lines for this role, beyond the ones in the example. Borrow the shape and put in your own numbers.
- Launched a weekly newsletter that grew to 52,000 subscribers in 2 years with a 44% open rate.
- Built a customer story program with 35 case studies used in 60% of late-stage sales deals.
- Refreshed 220 older articles, lifting their organic traffic by 70% in six months with no new publishing.
- Started a podcast for finance leaders with 40 episodes and 9,000 downloads per episode.
- Cut freelance costs by 25% by moving to a smaller, trained pool on fixed monthly rates.
- Created a gated report program that generated 6,500 marketing qualified leads in a year.
- Set up content attribution in HubSpot with marketing operations, showing content’s share of pipeline for the first time.
- Hired and developed 3 writers, one now a content lead at another company.
- Repurposed each pillar article into 6 social and email pieces, tripling reach per article.
Skills to list
Hard skills
Soft skills
Certifications and licenses worth listing
- HubSpot Content Marketing Certification: a free, recognized course; worth a line for content roles at HubSpot users.
- Google Analytics Certification: useful for reporting on content performance.
- A portfolio beats any certificate in content leadership interviews; list courses only if space allows.
Length and format
One or two pages. With ten or more years, one page usually works if older writing jobs shrink to one line each. A minimal, text-first template suits content roles; put the portfolio link in the header.
Common mistakes
- Output-only bullets (“published 300 articles”) with no traffic, sign-up or pipeline result.
- Leaving out the team and freelancers you manage, which hides the management part of the job.
- No portfolio, or a portfolio of pieces you only lightly edited presented as your own writing.
- A summary that sounds like marketing copy. Plain, specific sentences show editorial skill best.
Questions and answers
How do I show the business value of content?
Follow content as far as you can track it: organic traffic, sign-ups or leads from content, pipeline influenced, and deals where sales used your pieces. Even one solid pipeline number makes your traffic numbers more convincing.
Should I list journalism experience on a content marketing resume?
Yes, briefly. It shows reporting, writing to deadline and an eye for a story, all valued in content teams. One line per role is usually enough.
What should a content marketing portfolio include?
Five to eight pieces across formats: an article that ranks, a report, a case study, a newsletter issue. Add one line on each piece’s result and your role.
