Cover letter generator
Write a letter in the same design as your resume, with a simple four-part structure to guide you. Free PDF, no sign-up.
Find the hiring manager’s name on the job ad, the company site or LinkedIn. A name beats “To whom it may concern”.
Four short paragraphs work well: why you are writing, what you bring, why this company, and a friendly close.
192 words. A good length.
How to write your cover letter here
- Use your resume’s details. Choose one of your saved resumes under Use my details and design from. Your name, contact details, template, font and colour are copied, so the letter and the resume match.
- Add the recipient. The hiring manager’s name, title and company. A real name beats “To whom it may concern”.
- Write four short paragraphs. The structure helper labels each one: opening, why you, why them, close. Press Starter on an empty paragraph for a sentence frame with blanks to fill in.
- Download the PDF. It is named like Maya-Alvarez-Cover-Letter.pdf. Your letters save themselves in this browser; open My cover letters to switch between them.
A simple cover letter structure that works
- Opening: the role you are applying for, and one line on why you are a strong match. If someone referred you, say so here.
- Why you: two or three achievements that match what the job ad asks for, with numbers. Do not repeat your resume line by line; pick the evidence that matters most for this job.
- Why them: what draws you to this company in particular. Specific beats flattering: a product you use, a market they serve, a problem they are solving.
- Close: thank them, say you would welcome a conversation, and how to reach you.
Keep it to one page, about 250 to 400 words. The editor shows a word count as you write.
Tips from recruiters
- Write a new letter for each job. Duplicate a letter and tailor it; a generic letter is easy to spot.
- Mirror the job ad’s language where it is true for you, the same way you would on your resume.
- Lead with the employer’s needs, not yours. “You need someone who can…” reads better than “I am looking for…”.
- Proofread out loud. Then check the company name and the recipient’s name twice.
Questions and answers
Is the cover letter generator free?
Yes. Writing, saving and downloading the PDF are free, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Does it write the letter for me?
No, and that is deliberate: there is no AI here. The structure helper and the starter sentences help you write a letter that sounds like you, which recruiters can tell apart from generated text.
Will my cover letter match my resume?
Yes, if you copy your details from a resume made in the resume builder: the letter uses the same template, font, accent colour, paper size and contact header.
How long should a cover letter be?
Usually three to five short paragraphs, about 250 to 400 words, and never more than one page.
What if I do not know the hiring manager’s name?
Look on the job ad, the company website or LinkedIn. If you cannot find it, “Dear Hiring Manager,” or “Dear [Team name] team,” is fine.
Where are my letters stored?
In this browser only, like your resumes. A backup exported from My resumes in the resume builder includes your cover letters as well.
