Science and research resume and CV examples

Resumes for people who run experiments in labs, clinics and companies, and full academic CVs for those on the faculty path. Each example shows what a hiring committee or lab manager reads first at that stage.

Resume or CV?

Jobs outside universities (a lab technician, a clinical research coordinator, a scientist at a biotech company) want a resume: one or two pages, results first, with a short publications line at most. Faculty, postdoc and fellowship applications want a CV: the complete academic record, with education first, then publications, grants, teaching, presentations and service, as long as it needs to be.

If you are leaving academia for industry, turn your CV into a resume. Keep three to five publications that match the job, replace “research interests” with a summary of the techniques and problems you can solve, and describe each project by what it found and what it made possible.

Techniques are keywords

Science hiring screens heavily on methods: qPCR, flow cytometry, CRISPR editing, LC-MS, cryo-EM, single-cell RNA-seq, two-photon imaging, Good Clinical Practice. List the ones you can do unsupervised, and mention the important ones again in the bullets where you used them. Separate what you run independently from what you have only seen done; interviews test the difference.

Write for two readers

The first reader is often a recruiter or a department administrator matching requirements. The second is a scientist who knows your field better than the recruiter. Write a plain summary for the first and precise bullets for the second: the model system, the method, the scale and the result.

Questions and answers

How long should an academic CV be?

As long as the record: two pages for a PhD candidate, three to six for an assistant professor, often longer for a full professor. The examples here show selected publications to keep them readable; in a real application, list every peer-reviewed paper unless the call asks for a selection.

Should I list publications on an industry resume?

A short selection, yes: three to five papers or patents related to the role, or a single line such as “7 peer-reviewed papers, 3 first-author” with a link to your Google Scholar profile.

Do I include my GPA on a science CV?

Not after your first degree. Graduate GPA is rarely listed. Undergraduates applying for lab jobs or graduate programs can include it if it is strong.

Should I use the CV maker or the resume builder?

Use the CV maker for academic applications: it has the academic sections ready. Use the resume builder for industry, government and clinical roles.
