Lawyer and legal resume examples

Resumes for people who work in law, from a law student applying for a clerkship to a general counsel. Each one shows how hiring partners, legal recruiters and in-house teams read a legal resume.

Admissions, practice area and matters

A legal recruiter reads three things first: where you are admitted, what you practice, and what kind of matters you have handled. Put bar and court admissions in their own section with years. Name your practice area in your headline or summary. Then describe matters by type, size and your role (“first-chaired”, “led diligence”, “drafted the opposition brief”), because that is how a hiring partner judges level.

Precision is part of the test

Legal readers treat a resume as a writing sample. One typo, an inconsistent date format or a vague claim tells them how you might draft a contract or a brief. Keep the format conservative (a classic, single-column layout reads as expected in most firms), use the same date style everywhere, and cut every word that does not carry a fact.

Respect confidentiality the way you would at work. Describe clients by industry and size (“a national medical device manufacturer”) unless the matter is public, and never include privileged details. Reviewers notice discretion, and they notice its absence even more.

Firm, in-house and government resumes differ

Law firms read for academic credentials, training and the matters you have worked on. In-house teams read for business judgment: how fast you close contracts, what risk you took off the table, and whether sales and product teams like working with you. Government and public interest employers often want a longer, more detailed resume and care about mission and public service. Adjust the order of your bullets for each.

Questions and answers

Should a lawyer’s resume be one page or two?

One page for law students and junior associates; two pages are normal for senior lawyers, especially with a representative matters list. Government and academic applications may run longer.

Should lawyers include GPA and class rank?

Law students and associates in their first few years usually do, especially for firm jobs and clerkships, along with honors and journal roles. After about five years of practice, most drop them.

How do I describe confidential client work?

By industry, size and type of matter, with your role and the result if it is public or approved for sharing. “Represented a regional hospital system in a $90 million acquisition” says enough.

Is a legal assistant the same as a paralegal?

Some employers use the titles interchangeably. Usually, a legal assistant handles more administrative work (calendars, filings, client contact) and a paralegal does more substantive legal work under an attorney’s supervision.
