Engineering resume examples

Resumes for engineers in the physical world: buildings, roads, machines, plants and power systems. Each example shows how to present projects, licensure and design tools at that stage, from a first internship to a principal’s seal.

Projects are your evidence

An engineering hiring manager reads your bullets for three things: what you designed or improved, how big or complex it was, and what it achieved. Give the scale in the units your field uses: a $14 million interchange, a 230 kV substation, a 40,000-part-a-day line, a 600-psi compressor skid. Then give the result: cost, schedule, safety, yield, scrap, energy.

Say what part was yours. Engineering work is done in teams, and “designed the bridge” from a three-year engineer is not believable. “Designed the drainage and grading for a 2-mile widening under the project engineer” is, and it is still impressive.

Licensure and where to put it

In civil, structural and much of electrical power work, licensure is a gate: the FE exam and an EIT or EI certificate early on, then the PE (and in some states the SE for significant structures). List it near the top, after your name or in the summary, and again in a certifications section with the state and the year. In product, manufacturing and most mechanical roles, a PE is a plus but rarely required.

If you are close to a milestone, say so: “FE passed, PE exam scheduled for April 2027” tells an employer exactly where you are on the path.

Software, standards and codes

Name the design tools and the codes you design to. AutoCAD Civil 3D, SolidWorks, Revit, ETAP or Aspen HYSYS are screening keywords; so are ASCE 7, the NEC, ASME Y14.5 or OSHA process safety management. Put the main ones in your skills section and mention them again in the bullets where you used them.

Questions and answers

Should an engineering resume be one page or two?

One page for interns, new graduates and most engineers under about eight years. Licensed engineers with many projects, and anyone in consulting where project lists matter, can use two pages. Principals often attach a separate project list as well.

Do I need to list my GPA as an engineer?

For internships and your first job, list it if it is 3.0 or higher; many engineering employers screen on it. After two or three years of experience, drop it.

Where should I put the PE license on my resume?

Twice: after your name or in the summary (“Jane Doe, PE”) and in a Licenses and certifications section with the state, license number if you choose, and year. Recruiters for civil and structural roles look for it first.

Should I include a project list?

Consultants and civil, structural and environmental engineers often should: three to six notable projects with your role, the client type, the size and the outcome. Product engineers usually fold projects into their experience bullets instead.
