Senior mechanical engineer resume example
A senior mechanical engineer’s resume with 13 years of experience and a PE. Senior engineers are hired to lead technically: own the hardest designs, sign off on code compliance, solve the field problems others cannot and raise the engineers around them.
What recruiters look for
- Technical ownership: you are the lead or responsible engineer, with the size of the products or projects you own.
- Codes and sign-off: ASME, API, AWS or other codes you design to, and what you are responsible for approving.
- Hard problems solved: failures, vibration, fatigue, thermal issues, with the analysis and the fix.
- Platform or process improvements: standard designs, tools or methods that made the whole team faster.
- Leading and mentoring: team size, design reviews you run, engineers you developed.
Writing the summary
Years, PE if you have it, the equipment or systems you specialize in, and your leadership role. One phrase about the problems people bring to you makes it memorable.
Senior mechanical engineer and PE with 13 years designing rotating equipment packages and pressure systems for gas compression and process industries. I lead engineering teams on custom orders from proposal to field startup, and I am the person others bring the hard vibration and fatigue problems to.
Senior mechanical engineer in aerospace
Senior mechanical engineer with 12 years in aircraft engine components, leading structural analysis and design for turbine cases and frames. I own designs through certification testing and mentor a team of 5 analysts.
Senior HVAC mechanical engineer
Senior mechanical engineer and PE with 14 years designing HVAC and plumbing systems for hospitals, labs and universities. I lead project teams as engineer of record on buildings up to 400,000 sq ft and manage design fees up to $2 million.
Bullet points that work
Strong lines for this role, beyond the ones in the example. Borrow the shape and put in your own numbers.
- Led a cost reduction program across 30 standard parts that saved $1.2 million a year without changing performance.
- Investigated a field bearing failure with 2 customers and the supplier; the design change cut warranty costs by 60%.
- Owned the mechanical design of a new product line from concept through 3 prototype rounds to production in 18 months.
- Wrote the department’s design verification procedure, adopted for every new product since 2022.
- Reviewed 200 drawings a year as the final engineering approver before release.
- Ran CFD on a cooler fan shroud that raised airflow by 12% and allowed a smaller motor.
- Represented engineering in 25 customer design reviews and factory acceptance tests.
- Interviewed and helped hire 6 engineers, and onboarded them with a 90-day plan.
- Taught a 10-session internal course on FEA best practice to 18 engineers.
Skills to list
Hard skills
Soft skills
Certifications and licenses worth listing
- Professional Engineer (PE), Mechanical: expected for anyone signing pressure equipment, building systems or public-facing designs; a mark of seniority elsewhere.
- ASME GDTP Senior: for senior engineers who own drawing standards.
- Vibration Analyst Category II or III (Vibration Institute or ISO 18436-2): valuable for rotating equipment specialists.
- PMP: a plus if you are moving toward engineering project management.
Length and format
One or two pages. With 13 years, two pages are fine; keep your current role, its scope and your biggest technical result on page one. A master’s thesis title can stay if it relates to your specialty.
Common mistakes
- A senior resume that reads like a mid-level one: designs completed, with no ownership, sign-off or team.
- No codes or standards listed, which makes a reader wonder whether you design pressure equipment to code at all.
- Problem-solving bullets that stop at the analysis. Say what changed and whether the problem came back.
- Leaving mentoring and design reviews out. At this level, they are part of the job.
- Long lists of every software version. Name the tools and move on.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a senior mechanical engineer and a mechanical engineer resume?
Scope and ownership. A mid-level resume shows designs and results; a senior resume shows you lead the design, sign off on it, solve the hardest problems and develop other engineers.
Should a senior mechanical engineer get a PE?
If your work involves pressure equipment, building systems, public safety or consulting, yes. In product companies it is optional but still respected.
How do I move from senior engineer to engineering manager on paper?
Make the leadership visible: team size, hiring, planning, budgets and people you developed. See the engineering manager example for how management resumes read.
