Copywriter resume example
A copywriter’s resume with five years at an agency and in-house at a bank. Creative directors hire on the book (your portfolio of work), so the resume’s job is to show range, the kind of clients you have handled and that your words did something measurable.
What recruiters look for
- Range of formats: headlines, scripts, long-form, email, UX copy. Name them, because many teams need someone who can switch.
- Concepts, not just copy: campaigns where you shaped the idea with an art director, not only filled in the words.
- Results: open and click rates, conversions, bookings, test wins. Writers who measure stand out.
- Industries and voices: regulated sectors like banking and health need writers who can work with legal review.
- A book that is easy to browse: six to ten pieces, with your role on each.
Writing the summary
Say what you write, for whom and in which formats, then one sentence on how you write. Your summary is a writing sample, so make it sound like you, and make every word earn its place.
Copywriter with five years writing campaigns, websites and email for banks, tourism and food brands. I find the one thing a reader needs to hear, say it plainly and test whether it worked. Equally at home on a 6-word headline, a 60-second radio script and a 2,000-word landing page.
Journalist or content writer moving into copywriting
Former newspaper reporter with six years of daily deadlines, now writing marketing copy for a health system: emails, web pages and patient guides. I research fast, write clearly for the general public and never miss a deadline.
Copywriter moving into UX writing
Copywriter with five years in campaigns and web copy, now writing in-product messages and onboarding for a banking app. My error message rewrites cut related support calls by 22%, and I want to do this full time on a product design team.
Bullet points that work
Strong lines for this role, beyond the ones in the example. Borrow the shape and put in your own numbers.
- Wrote a subject line test program for 40 emails a year, lifting average click-through from 2.1% to 3.4%.
- Concepted and wrote a launch campaign for a new snack line, from naming to packaging copy, sold in 1,200 stores.
- Rewrote 60 product descriptions for an online store, raising add-to-cart rate by 14% in an A/B test.
- Wrote a 30-second TV spot and 3 radio spots that ran across 4 states on a $400,000 media budget.
- Cut the time from brief to first draft from 5 days to 2 by building a briefing template with account managers.
- Rewrote 120 app error messages and empty states, cutting support tickets about failed transfers by 18%.
- Wrote landing pages for a paid search program that lowered cost per lead from $64 to $41.
- Edited and wrote a 48-page annual report on a 5-week deadline, working with 9 department heads.
- Named 3 products from 200 candidates, each cleared by trademark counsel on the first submission.

Certifications and licenses worth listing
- None required: copywriters are hired on their book and their references.
- HubSpot Content Marketing or Email Marketing certification: a small plus for in-house roles in marketing teams that use HubSpot.
- Awards (ADDY, One Show, D&AD, Cannes Lions) carry more weight than any certificate. List them with the year and the level.
Length and format
One page. Put the portfolio link in the header and keep bullets short: a reader will judge your editing on them. An awards line belongs near the bottom if you have one.
Common mistakes
- Long, loose bullets on a writer’s resume. Every line is a writing sample; edit it like one.
- Listing every format you have ever written with no examples or results.
- A portfolio link to PDFs without context. Say the brief, your role and the result for each piece.
- Hiding regulated-industry experience. Banks, insurers and health systems look for it.
- Clichés like “wordsmith” or “storyteller” in the headline. Show it instead.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a copywriter and a content writer?
Copywriters write to make someone act now (buy, sign up, call) and often work on campaigns with art directors. Content writers write to inform and attract over time (articles, guides, SEO). Many jobs blend both; describe the mix you have done.
Should a copywriter’s resume be creative?
The writing should be. The layout can stay simple. A clear, well-edited one-page resume is the best proof of the job you are applying for.
How do I show copy results if the client owns the data?
Ask the account or marketing team for approved figures. If you cannot share them, describe scale (markets, audience, media budget) and recognition instead.
