Marketing director resume example
A marketing director’s resume with 14 years in consumer brands and four running the marketing function for a mid-size company. CEOs and CMOs hiring a director want to know that marketing under you grew revenue efficiently and that the team got stronger, so the bullets show budget, growth, efficiency and brand health together.
What recruiters look for
- Scope: team size, agencies, budget and the channels you own.
- Revenue growth with efficiency: sales or pipeline growth alongside CAC, ROAS or marketing ROI.
- Brand results: awareness, consideration or preference from research, not only impressions.
- Planning and measurement: media mix models, attribution, annual plans you built and defended.
- Team leadership: hires, structure, people you developed.
Writing the summary
Say your years and industry, the size of the business, your team and budget. Then how you run marketing and what you report it in. Three sentences that a CEO could read in ten seconds.
Marketing director with 14 years in consumer brands, now leading a team of 14 and a $9 million budget for a cookware company with $180 million in sales. I bring brand, performance and retail marketing into one plan and report it in revenue, margin and customer lifetime value.
B2B marketing director
Marketing director with 13 years in B2B software, leading demand generation, product marketing and brand for a $120 million ARR company. My team of 18 sources 55% of new pipeline, and I built the attribution model sales and finance both trust.
Senior marketing manager stepping up to director
Senior marketing manager with ten years in consumer brands, leading 3 brands with $70 million in sales and a team of 5. I have run the annual plan and budget for two years and am ready to lead the full marketing function.
Bullet points that work
Strong lines for this role, beyond the ones in the example. Borrow the shape and put in your own numbers.
- Took marketing-sourced pipeline from 30% to 52% of new business in two years with an account-based program.
- Cut the agency roster from 7 to 3 and brought paid social in-house, saving $650,000 a year.
- Built a team of 18 from 6, including 4 managers, with 90% retention over three years.
- Launched a product line with sales and product that reached $20 million in its first year.
- Introduced quarterly brand tracking with 1,500 consumers, linking awareness gains to regional sales growth.
- Defended a 15% budget increase to the board with a media mix model showing a 3.2x return on the added spend.
- Rebuilt the website on a new platform with the e-commerce team, lifting conversion rate from 2.1% to 3.0%.
- Ran the rebrand of a 60-year-old company across 4,000 retail doors without a sales dip.
- Set up marketing operations and a shared dashboard used by the CEO, sales and finance every week.
Skills to list
Hard skills
Soft skills
Certifications and licenses worth listing
- None expected: marketing directors are judged on growth, efficiency and the team they built.
- An MBA or executive education belongs under Education; it helps most when moving toward VP or CMO roles.
- Professional Certified Marketer (PCM), American Marketing Association: a recognized general credential, optional at this level.
Length and format
Two pages. The top half of page one should show your team, budget, growth and efficiency. Earlier roles get two bullets at most, and anything older than about 15 years can be a single line.
Common mistakes
- Channel-level detail (open rates, CPCs) instead of business results and how you ran the function.
- Growth with no cost. Directors are expected to show efficiency as well as growth.
- Leaving out team size, structure and agencies.
- Brand claims with no research behind them (“elevated the brand”).
- A summary that lists every channel instead of saying what you lead and what it delivered.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a marketing director and a CMO resume?
A director usually runs marketing for a brand, region or mid-size company and reports to a CEO, CMO or VP. A CMO sits on the executive team, owns the whole marketing strategy and often customer experience or communications too. Show the scope you actually had.
Should a marketing director include channel metrics?
A few, when they show a decision that paid off. Most bullets should report revenue, efficiency, brand health and team results.
How long should a marketing director resume be?
Two pages is normal with 12 or more years. Keep the top half of page one for your current scope and biggest results.
