Staff software engineer resume example
A staff engineer’s resume with 13 years of experience. Staff and principal roles are hired for leverage: the bullets show strategy, decisions that changed how a whole organization works, and the engineers who grew because of it.
What recruiters look for
- Organization-level impact: strategy and platforms that changed how dozens or hundreds of engineers work.
- Multi-year technical bets: what you proposed, how you got it funded, and how it turned out.
- Standards and culture: architecture reviews, guidelines, reliability programs that outlived your involvement.
- Growing senior engineers: sponsorship and promotions are a core staff responsibility.
- External signal: talks, writing or open source show you can explain complex ideas clearly.
Writing the summary
Say the archetype you play (technical lead for an area, architect, solver of hard problems, right hand to a director) and the size of the organization you influence. Make the leverage explicit.
Staff engineer with 13 years in infrastructure and developer platforms. I set technical direction across organizations of 100 to 300 engineers, turn vague problems into funded multi-year plans, and measure success by how much faster other teams ship.
Principal engineer in a product area
Principal engineer with 15 years in e-commerce, setting technical direction for search, recommendations and pricing across 12 teams. I connect product strategy to architecture and make sure our biggest bets ship.
Staff engineer moving from a big company to a scale-up
Staff engineer with 12 years at a large cloud provider, where I led storage reliability for 3,000 enterprise customers. Looking to bring that rigor to a scale-up that needs to grow from 50 to 300 engineers without slowing down.
Bullet points that work
Strong lines for this role, beyond the ones in the example. Borrow the shape and put in your own numbers.
- Wrote the technical strategy that consolidated 5 data platforms into 1, approved with a $4 million budget and delivered in 18 months.
- Defined the company’s API standards, adopted by 30 teams and enforced through linting in CI.
- Reduced p99 latency across the product by 45% through a cross-team performance program with 8 teams.
- Identified a data-loss risk in the replication design, led the fix across 4 teams, and avoided a potential multi-day outage.
- Created the staff engineering ladder and calibration process with engineering leadership.
- Led the build-versus-buy analysis for observability, switching vendors and saving $1.1 million a year.
- Unblocked a stalled 2-year migration by redesigning the cut-over plan; finished it in 4 months.
- Mentored 12 engineers across 3 years, of whom 5 were promoted to senior and 2 to staff.
- Represented engineering in due diligence for a $200 million acquisition and led the technical integration plan.
Skills to list
Hard skills
Soft skills
Certifications and licenses worth listing
- Rarely relevant at staff level: the evidence of strategy and influence decides the interview.
- Cloud architect professional certifications can help when moving into a cloud-heavy company or a consultancy.
Length and format
Two pages are normal. Keep page one for your current and previous role. A short Talks and writing section is worth the space if you have speaking or published work.
Common mistakes
- Describing staff work as more senior-level features. Every bullet should show leverage beyond your own code.
- No strategy story: a reader should see at least one multi-year bet from proposal to result.
- Underplaying people impact. Mentoring and sponsorship are part of the job description at this level.
- Overloading the skills section with tools. At staff level, list areas of expertise rather than libraries.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a senior and a staff engineer resume?
Senior resumes show excellent execution and team leadership. Staff resumes show influence over many teams: strategy, standards, platforms and people who grew because of you.
Should a staff engineer include a projects or talks section?
Talks, articles and well-known open-source work are worth including because they show you can explain and persuade. Hobby projects usually are not.
How do I show impact that is shared with many people?
Be honest about your role: “led”, “proposed”, “set the direction for”, “coordinated 4 teams”. Then give the shared result. Reviewers expect staff work to be collaborative.
