Senior data scientist resume example
A senior data scientist’s resume with nine years of experience in pricing and forecasting. Senior roles are hired for judgment and leadership: picking the right problem, getting a model all the way to production, and lifting the scientists around you.
What recruiters look for
- End-to-end ownership: from framing the problem with the business to a model in production and a measured result.
- Large, durable outcomes: programs worth millions a year or decisions the company now runs on.
- Methodological depth: you know why the obvious method fails here (interference, hierarchy, censoring) and what to do instead.
- Leading without managing: tech lead of a small team, model review standards, mentoring and promotions.
- A clear specialty: pricing, forecasting, experimentation, recommendations, risk. Seniors are often hired to fill a specific gap.
Writing the summary
Years, domain, specialty and the kind of leadership you provide. A senior summary should tell a hiring manager which hard problem you could take off their plate on day one.
Senior data scientist with nine years in logistics and retail, leading pricing, forecasting and optimization work that runs core business decisions. I scope ambiguous problems, lead small teams of scientists and engineers to production, and set the modeling standards others build on.
Senior data scientist in experimentation and product
Senior product data scientist with eight years at consumer apps of 5 to 50 million users. I lead experimentation strategy for a product area, build metrics teams trust, and coach analysts and scientists to make sound calls quickly.
Senior data scientist moving toward a management role
Senior data scientist with ten years in risk and lending who has led a pod of four scientists for two years: planning, hiring and reviewing their work. Looking for a first data science manager role in financial services.
Bullet points that work
Strong lines for this role, beyond the ones in the example. Borrow the shape and put in your own numbers.
- Scoped and led a 9-month credit limit optimization program with risk and finance, adding $7 million in annual interest income at flat losses.
- Replaced 40 separate regional forecasts with one hierarchical model, cutting maintenance from 3 people to 1 and error by a third.
- Identified network effects biasing 2 years of marketplace A/B tests and led the move to cluster-randomized designs.
- Built the causal impact framework the marketing team uses to evaluate $25 million of annual campaigns.
- Reviewed 50 model designs a year as chair of the modeling review group, stopping 3 launches with data leakage.
- Hired 5 data scientists and designed a take-home exercise that cut interview time per hire by 40%.
- Translated a stochastic inventory model into a one-page decision rule the operations team adopted in 120 warehouses.
- Presented pricing strategy results to the executive team each quarter and set the following quarter’s priorities with them.
- Cut cloud training costs by 55% by moving 8 models from GPU to CPU-based gradient boosting with no loss in accuracy.
Skills to list
Hard skills
Soft skills
Certifications and licenses worth listing
- Not a factor for most senior data science roles: your outcomes and methods decide the interview.
- INFORMS Certified Analytics Professional (CAP): recognized in operations research and analytics consulting circles.
- PStat (American Statistical Association): meaningful in pharma, insurance and regulated modeling roles.
Length and format
One or two pages. With nine years, two pages are fine if page two carries real results; keep your current program and its dollar outcome in the top third. A short Talks or Publications line is worth including if it shows your specialty.
Common mistakes
- Writing like a mid-level scientist: a list of models, with no sign you chose the problem or led others.
- Leaving out why the obvious approach failed. That reasoning is what separates senior candidates.
- Hiding mentoring and review work in the last bullet. It is a large part of what a senior is hired for.
- Results stated only as model accuracy. Senior work is judged by the decisions and money it moved.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a data scientist and a senior data scientist resume?
A mid-level resume shows strong individual models and experiments. A senior resume shows programs: a problem you scoped, a team you led to production, standards you set and people you grew.
Should a senior data scientist include publications?
Include papers, patents or talks that relate to the role. Leave out unrelated academic work, or reduce it to a single line.
How do I show leadership without direct reports?
Say how many people worked on the program you led, which reviews you chair, who you mentored and what happened to them. These are the signals both staff and manager tracks look for.
